Saturday 10 AM Rally at 17th & Corcoran on Trees, 17th Streetscape
A note from Jack Jacobson, ANC 2B-04, explains:
On Saturday, December 5, at 10:00 am, the Dupont ANC will be holding a rally outside the Safeway at 17th and Corcoran regarding the City’s plans for trees lining 17th Street during the pending Streetscape project. At the November 23 public meeting on the 17th St. renovation project, DDOT reminded the community that a significant number of trees – virtually all the trees between P Street and Riggs on 17th Street – would be removed to accommodate the streetscape project. Numerous attendees at the meeting were concerned with the enormous loss of tree canopy in the neighborhood, and DDOT is now providing the community two choices: 1) the original plan, which would replace nearly every tree between P and Riggs but would reduce future tree and sidewalk problems as roots grow over the next several decades; or 2) a scaled back plan, which would only remove 7 trees but which would not correct the systemic sidewalk problems due to root growth. I would invite you to join me for the walk of 17th Street at 10 am. If you are unavailable at that time, please send me your thoughts if you have strong feelings one way or the other.

Jack Jacobson’s post omits some critical information. Trees are proposed for removal, but more trees are proposed to be planted than currently exist. The trees proposed for removal are in highly compacted soil which has stunted the trees’ growth and will cause them to continue to buckle the sidewalk. New, innovative tree planting techniques will be used to provide trees with a large volume of high quality soil and in a way that will not buckle the sidewalk. Further, most trees south of P street and north of Riggs are being saved.

The move to kill off the trees along 17th street seems consistent with the DuPont Circle Citizens Association’s zeal for killing off all business along 17th street. Businesses cause trouble, and so do all those damned trees! Get rid of each, and 17th street will become the Mausoleum the DCCA wants 17th street to be!
As a homeowner on the 1700 block of Corcoran and long-time resident of Dupont Circle, I am strongly opposed to taking down any mature trees on 17th Street (or anywhere in Dupont Circle) unless it is necessary because a tree is posing a safety hazard or has been deemed to be in immiment danger of dying by a certified arborist. Our tree canopy is one of the many distinguishing factors of our community. We need to preserve our trees, even if it means a little additional expense over time to accomodate for sidewalk repairs. Losing a large number of trees will devastate the look and feel of our neighborhood. Let’s please rally to make ourselves heard if we want to avert this disaster. Thank you.
