Borderstan Crime Down 26% in November Over Last Year


The number of crimes in November 2009 in the Borderstan crime reporting area¹ see sawed over the previous two Novembers, 2007 and 2008. But, the trend was downward in 2009—the total numbr of crimes dropped 26% from November 2008.

The year over year drop was due to a 67% decrease in the number of violent crimes and a 19% decrease in property crimes for November. There were 3 violent crimes last month compared to 9 in November 2008 and 5 in November 2007. There were 39 property crimes in November of this year, down from 48 in November 2008 and down from 44 in November 2007.

This drop for last month is a turnaround from trends we saw for the same time period in 2007 and 2008. In 2008 property crimes jumped 23% over 2007, and the number of gun crimes (robberies and assaults in which a gun was used by the perpetrator) leapt 100% over 2007. This year, there were 3 gun crimes in the Borderstan crime reporting in November of this year; this compares to 4 in November 2008 and 2 in November 2007. Based on the data, we can assume an average of 3 gun crimes in Borderstan during the month of November.

Total Crime

  • There were 42 total crimes in the Borderstan crime area¹ in November 2009 compared to 57 in November 2008 and 44 in November 2007. Percentage-wise, crime was down 26% last month compared to November 2008 and 5% compared to November 2007.

Violent Crime

  •  There were 3 violent crimes in Borderstan in November of this year—down from 9 in October 2008 and down from the 5 in October 2007.
    • The number of robberies (with and without a gun) declined dramatically in November compared to last year: there were 3 robberies in October 2009 compared to 7 in 2008 and 4 in 2007.
    • Gun crimes (robberies and assaults committed with a gun) are up AND down:  2 in November 2007, 5 in November 2008 and 3 in November this year.
    • Assault with a dangerous weapon (with and without a gun): There were assaults in November 2009; there was 1  assault in November 2007 and 2008.

Property Crime

  • There were 39 property crimes in the area in November 2009, a 19% drop from the 48 property crimes in 2008, and are at the same levels we experienced (39 property crimes) in November 2007.
    • Thefts from autos declined last month: 17 in November 2009 compared to 23 in 2008, a 26% drop. There were 14 thefts from autos in November 2007.
    • Stolen autos: The number of stolen autos in November dropped dramatically from last year, from 4 in 2008 to 0 in November 2009—a 100% decrease. There were 9 stolen autos in November 2007.
    • Burglaries: The number of burglaries in November has continued its upward climb over the past three years: 3 in both 2007, 5 in 2008 and 6 burglaries in November of this year.
    • Thefts: The number of thefts in November remained constant from last year, but up 23% over 2007. There were 16 thefts in November 2009, 16 in November 2008; there were 13 thefts in November 2007.

¹ The Borderstan crime reporting area (see map above) covers a circular area that radiates 1,500 feet from 15th and Corcoran Streets NW—an area that runs  from 13th Street/Logan Circle west to New Hampshire Avenue/half way between 17th and 18th Streets… and from Rhode Island Avenue/O Street  in the south to T/Caroline Streets in the north. The Borderstan crime reporting area includes parts of Police Service Area (PSA) 208 (west of 15th) and PSA 307 (east of 15th), with a sliver of PSA 305 in the northeast.
